According to materials from the Green Mars Workshop, modern technologies are making terraforming a more realistic, albeit very long-term, task. The key steps include first warming the planet using artificial greenhouse gases or aerosols to melt ice reserves and create liquid water. Then specially engineered microorganisms would be introduced to begin producing oxygen.
All of this would require centuries, if not millennia. However, the declining cost of cargo delivery (thanks to Starship and similar projects) and advances in biotechnology make the project at least open to serious discussion.
However, terraforming raises serious ethical questions. If even microbial life already exists on Mars, we could destroy it before having the chance to study it. Moreover, any large-scale changes would transform Mars and eliminate the opportunity to study it in its pristine state.
For now, the discussion is not about immediate implementation, but about the need for further research, modeling, and small-scale experiments in future missions.
