If inside you there’s an anxious controller, no regulations will save the business from stagnation.
If you are exhausted, any family conversation will inevitably turn into a breakdown and mutual reproaches.
To see your blind spots, it’s not enough to go to yet another training or read a business bestseller.
A leader’s brain, accustomed to running at ultra-high RPM, needs a complete pattern interrupt and a change of sensory environment.
Recently, during an individual retreat with a CFO in Karelia, we were sitting on the terrace of a floating house in Rautalahti. Around us— the ringing silence of the Ladoga skerries, gray rocks, вековые pines, and calm, gentle water.
My client—a CFO of a large company—for the first two days, by inertia, checked reception every 15 minutes; messages with loud sounds kept pouring in one after another. He was nervous about the delay of the boat to Valaam and tried to build a minute-by-minute schedule.
On the third day, after a long walk over the rocks to the neighboring lakes and an evening banya overlooking the skerries, he left his phone in the room, went out onto the pier, and silently watched the water for almost an hour.
And then he suddenly said the phrase for which I do this work:
“Lyudmila, I just realized a terrifying thing. For the last seven years I’ve been fighting windmills. Half the deals I lay awake at night over and that ruined my first marriage weren’t needed by the business. They were needed by my ego—to prove to myself that I’m strong. Tomorrow I’m going back to Moscow and shutting down three meaningless направления. I want to live.”
This is what the architecture of thinking looks like in action. When the background noise goes away, crystal-clear managerial and life clarity rises to the surface.
If you feel like routine is pulling you under, and inside a dull irritation toward the business and those close to you is growing, ask yourself three questions tonight:
The price question: What real price (health, relationships with your children, your taste for life) are you paying right now for your hyper-control?
The legacy question: If your child copied your lifestyle right now—would you be genuinely happy for them?
The future question: Who will you be if tomorrow your position, status, and business card are taken away from you?
The answers may be uncomfortable. But it is precisely from that discomfort that a real return to yourself begins.
